Furniture that tells a story.

The process for creating our custom furniture begins with the wood. The materials that we use are usually sourced locally here in Vancouver, often within blocks of our showroom. These raw materials from the perfect foundation for making unique pieces that meet our clients’ specific custom furniture needs.

Our aesthetic reflects a utilitarian approach to design and carefully considers both form and function. This modest approach allows the age and patina of the materials to speak for themselves. Reclaimed wood is rich with character and often bears the scars of time——nail holes, cracks, checks and saw marks all reflect the material’s previous life as a piece of Vancouver history.

It is our intention for all of our work, including our custom furniture and our Union Wood Co Originals product line, to have a timeless feel. Inspired by our neighbourhood’s industrial past, we create clean, simple and bold designs that fit seamlessly into any environment, from a modern Yaletown condo to a Kitsilano character home.

Working with reclaimed wood, architectural salvage and other materials that would otherwise be destined for Vancouver’s landfill, is one of the most rewarding parts of the custom furniture process.

We visit demolition sites of historical landmarks, homes and industrial buildings to recover raw materials from an era of high quality construction and design. Many of these buildings were erected following the Great Vancouver Fire of 1886, which destroyed an entire city forcing residents to construct new buildings in their growing town such as The Vancouver Police Mounted Squad horse stables, The Gastown Hotel, The Pantages Theatre and one of Vancouver’s oldest print shops, Broadway Printers.

Faced with endless piles of timber, we’ll handpick the best boards of old-growth wood, which were originally cut from the massive trees that stood on the lots where buildings were to be erected. The timeworn patina and character of this reclaimed wood cannot be reproduced, making it a one-of-a-kind product that tells a story. Not only do we work with this wood, but also it’s available for sale in our showroom.
