OUR RECLAIMED FURNITURE
We search, we salvage, we make.
Union Wood Co. was founded in 2009 for the purpose of designing and building reclaimed wood furniture with a vintage feel. Nostalgic of the solid plank floors of Gastown’s docks, foundries and mills upon which Vancouver was built, we are continuously inspired by the simpler times of centuries past when materials and design were more raw, humble and functional.
Focused on the aesthetic aspects of vintage industrial objects and construction, we utilize antique wood and other raw materials in our custom reclaimed furniture pieces. Our designs are bold, uncomplicated and one of a kind.
Scouring demolition sites, salvage yards and abandoned buildings for the best old-growth wood and architectural salvage such as bricks, barn doors, lighting and industrial parts often find their way back home with us. Eventually these materials are incorporated into a project or are sold in our shop.
In our travels we also come across some remarkable reclaimed furniture and décor—beautiful pieces that speak the same language as our custom furniture. After fitting only so many pieces into our storage, we opened a showroom to display and sell these unique vintage finds.
Showroom and workshop.
Originally setting up shop in a boarded-up warehouse space in East Vancouver, the increase in orders for reclaimed wood furniture forced a welcome change. In 2011 we moved into a dilapidated and defunct mechanic’s garage in the historic Railtown Design District, fittingly just steps from where the city of Vancouver was founded.
We sandblasted, stripped and restored the space, creating a unique client-meets-manufacturer environment. The front of the shop displayed some of our current architectural salvage, reclaimed furniture and vintage finds, while the back contained the workshop.
By 2014, we outgrew our Railtown shop and after a year-long search we moved into our new home in East Vancouver’s Clark Dive Industrial district. Our new home is part of Vancouver’s oldest Wool Mill and is about 4 times the size of our previous Railtown location. Customers are welcomed into this space to view the materials and the team working on the furniture. Come visit us to get inspired or to browse through our shop.
